“Booo oooh…booo oooh…booooooo” – a crying Mita Aunty after watching ‘We are Family’

“This Karan dude is a smarty pants. He targets the tears of Indians and NRIs and makes BMWs and Mercedes’ out of them.” – Animesh, the boyfriend, after watching ‘We are Family’

“Kareena is actually not that beautiful. It is all because of the makeup.” – Pinky, the girlfriend, after watching ‘We are Family’

“Boooo boo boo booo…oooh” – a still-weeping Mita Aunty

I am somehow still not convinced that Arjun Rampal can actually act. He within his limits is an actor of little value beyond his looks. His acting or his virtue in the ‘We are Family’ showcase is comfortably forgettable. The movie, for whatever reasons it was made, deserves no respect if not for the presence of Kajol and the sharp Kajol-Kareena chemistry. The music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy sucks big time and so does the direction by Siddharth P Malhotra.

Terminally ill patient, cute kids, mother, father, extra-marital affair, divorce, cancer, tears – even cliché has become so cliché! Sure one feels sad but we have been feeling sad since we started watching the same emotions being played time after time – the new bottle is no more able to preserve the purity of the old wine. Make a genuine cinema and not an array of Manish Malhotra’s voguish costumes, Raju Singh’s teary background score and the trees and buildings of Australia through Mohanam’s cinematography.

The kids (Aanchal Munjal, Nominath Ginsberg and Diya Sonecha) were painstakingly plastic in their innocence and could help not much in saving the screenplay from being torturously dull at places. Kareena looked gorgeous and admirably scaled herself to match the talent of Kajol. If not anything else, Kajol could be the single important reason behind spending a fraction of your earnings on ‘We are Family’.
