Stage is set for the launch of Third Generation Mobile and Broadband Services in the country. The services are likely to be launched by the year end. The Department of Telecom today allocated 3G Spectrum to 10 operators. Prominent among them are Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communications, Tatas, Idea Cellular and Aircel. The spectrum to these Service Providers was allocated after successful bidding which brought 67,000 crore rupees to the government. Sources in the Department of Telecom told our correspondent that the Department amended service providers license norms to allow the service. The BSNL and MTNL were awarded spectrum more than a year ago as they have a long process of procuring equipment. BSNL offers services throughout the country except the metros of Delhi and Mumbai where MTNL is the operator. Our correspondent reports that government auction of 3G Slots will cover 22 circles across the country .
Our AIR Correspondent reports that The operators are authorised to use the spectrum for 20 years from today. The service providers would have to cover at least 90 per cent of the service areas in the metros within next five years. The launch of service will pave the way for high-speed mobile broadband services besides better quality of voice calls. Moreover, its users can download music files, full movie and other files at high speed. The 3G users can also make video calls and watch TV programmes on their mobile handsets. In short, the launch of third generation mobile service will bring yet another revolution in the mobile telephony.
