Volcano erupts in Indonesia
A Volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra has erupted for what is believed to be the first time in more than 400 years forcing at least twelve thousand people to be evacuated. The Sinabung volcano is sending smoke and ash 1,500 meters into the air.
Authorities say that Mt. Sinabung on the eastern island of Sumatra had long been considered an inactive volcano. But in the early hours today the volcano exploded. According to local reports the explosion caused smoke and ash to shoot up into the sky at a height of 1500 meters. Some witnesses have said they were able to see lava from the volcano from several kilometers away. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
