UN to provide assistance to cyclone affected families in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, the United Nations and its associated organisations have decided to provide assistance to 14,000 cyclone Aila affected families who are still living on embankments in Bangladesh. The decision was taken following a review meeting with UN aid agencies on the current Aila situation which was chaired by Bangladesh Minister of Food and Disaster Management Dr. Md. Abdur Razzaque in Dhaka. The UN agencies along with Britain’s Department for International Development will implement the programme at a cost of nearly 4.6 million US Dollars. The UN agencies will work to distribute food material, assist in providing temporary shelter and also and implement programmes related to supply of clean drinking water, Sanitation and Hygiene and nutrition intervention projects.
AIR correspondent reports that It has been more than one year since Cyclone Aila hit Bangladesh, but thousands of affected people are still living on embankments. A recent Joint UN Multi-Sector Assessment found that around 14,000 Aila affected families were still living on the embankments in the two districts of Khulna and Satkhira. The UN agencies have now decided to step in to provide assistance to the families to reduce their vulnerabilities in the rainy season. Nearly 3000 tonnes of food will be distributed under the World Food Programme while the UNDP will distribute shelter packages to those 14,000 families. The UNICEF will support those 14,000 vulnerable displaced households with basic Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and nutrition interventions programmes to reduce the vulnerability of Children .
