Rejection of Vedanta project is tribals’ victory: Rahul Gandhi
AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi has said that he will always stand for the rights of tribals. He said no development is possible without protecting the interests of tribals and dalits. Rahul Gandhi also said he will work hard to bring the tribals to the mainstream of development and ensure their voice is heard in Delhi.
He was addressing a huge gathering of tribals at Jagannathpur in Lanjigarh of Kalahandi district of Orissa. More from our correspondent:
Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s brief visit to Jagannathpur in Lanjigarh of backward Kalahandi district in Orissa has raised lots of hope for the tribals. He has kept his promise to protect the livelihood of tribals living nearby the Niyamgiri hills, given way back in March 2008 when he had visited Lanjigarh. He said the recent decision of the Centre rejecting environmental clearance to Vedanta Company for mining of bauxites in Niyamgiri hills is a victory of the tribals. He, however, clarified he is not against development. Rahul said there are two Hindustans, one is for rich and the other one is for the poor. He will fight for the Hindustan that belongs to the poor.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi was given a warm tribal tradition welcome by Dangaria kandhas by ghumra dance blended with their musical instruments. Elaborate security arrangements were made for his visit.
