Earthquake hits Mexico

MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off Mexico’s Pacific coast on early Monday evening, seismologists said, but there were no reports of damage or casualties.

The 6.4-magnitude earthquake at 7.12 p.m. local time (0212 GMT Tuesday) was centered about 330 kilometers (205 miles) west-southwest of Cihuatlán, a coastal municipality in the Mexican state of Jalisco. It struck about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Mexico Seismological Service.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the strength of the earthquake at 6.1 on the Richter scale, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center measured the strength of the earthquake at 6.4.

The USGS estimated that approximately 626,000 people may have felt ‘light’ shaking as a result of the earthquake, and another 420,000 people may have felt ‘weak’ shaking. It said no damage was expected.

A BNO News witness said he did not feel the earthquake. “Are you sure there was an earthquake? I didn’t feel anything,” said Benjamin Vega, who lives in Guadalajara.

On October 1995, a massive 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 328 kilometers (203 miles) east of Monday’s earthquake, killing at least 58 people.

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale hit off the west coast of Mexico. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said its epicentre was 290 kilometers from the town of Puerto Vallarta in the state of Jalisco. In its preliminary report, the monitoring service said the quake had a strength of 6.4, but revised the figure downwards later. The quake struck at 09:11 pm (local time) at a depth of 10 kilometers. No tsunami warning was issued. There are no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.
