US troops to start vacating Iraq by the month end, confirms Obama

Seven years after the American-led invasion in Iraq President Barack Obama has confirmed that all US combat troops will be withdrawn by the end of this month. Mr. Obama said this would fulfil the pledge he had made shortly after taking office. He described that the role of the American forces would change during the phased withdrawal. Fifty thousand American troops will stay until the end next year to train Iraqi forces and conduct counter terrorism operations.
In a speech to the Disabled Veterans of America in Atlanta, Georgia, the President praised the sacrifices of American forces in Iraq, and also underscored his commitment to defeating al-Qaida and extremists forces in Afghanistan.
