US mkts ended low after dollar slipped; unitial jobless claims rose by 22,000, much more than expected

In the US markets, stocks ended off intra-session lows as the dollar slipped after an early selloff triggered by higher jobless claims and worries about Greece. Initial jobless claims rose by 22,000, much more than expected.

At closing bell, the Dow Jones ended with just 0.5%, after being down more than 180 points earlier. The S&P 500 shut shop down 0.2% and the Nasdaq closed flat.

The CBOE volatility index, which had been pushing higher for much of the day, ended down slightly at 20.10.

The dollar gained in early trade on disappointing economic data and concerns about Greece. The euro eventually bounced back and pressured the dollar.
