Tata Steel to set up CTL plant in Orissa

Tata Steel and South Africa based Sasol Synfuels (Pty) Ltd on Monday expressed their desire to set up a 3.6-million-tonne per annum Coal to Liquid (CTL) plant in Orissa.

Tata Steel to set up CTL plant in OrissaTata Steel vice chairman, Mr B. Muthuraman, and Sasol Synfuels (Pty) Ltd managing director, Mr Ernst Oberholster, met the Orissa Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik and discussed the proposed project.

The CTL plant converts coal into liquid fuel.

After meeting CM, Mr Muthuraman said, “If materialised, the project would be first of its kind in India and second in the world.”

Investment in the project would be about Rs 40,000 to Rs 45,000 crore. It is likely to provide employment to nearly 35,000 people. The project will be completed over a period of eight years, Mr Muthuraman added.
