WorldSpace’s shut down disappoints music lovers
Despite its decision to shut India service, WorldSpace is not bombarded with angry letters from customers seeking a refund, but it is flooded with requests for extension of services.
“We don’t want our money. We just want the music keep flowing into our homes,” a WorldSpace customer told this correspondent.
“I was shocked and dejected to hear that WorldSpace India will be closing its operations,” noted Mr Raj Gandhi, a professor from Allahabad.
He said, “In a troubled world, where one mostly hears bad news, World-Space had added an element of peace and sanity by putting together good music, laced with knowledgeable talk about it, and unspoilt by commercials egging us on to consume more.”
After hearing the news of their favourite station going mute, many subscribers have started online communities to fight for it. Orkut and Facebook saw new communities popping up on the site. Facebook had a community ‘Keep World-Space India Alive’ and more than 350 members have enrolled there in 24 hours. Subscribers have left scraps saying that WorldSpace is their baby and should not be taken away from them.
Sources in WorldSpace customer service centre in Pune, said, “We don’t now what our fate would be starting New Year without a job. But we will stay and work till the last customer speaks to us on December 31.”
