Dattatreya Jayanthi 2009 – Dates, Legend and Celebrations
Dattatreya Jayanthi, or Datta Jayanthi, is the celebration of birthday of Sri Dattatreya who is known as Trimurty Avatar. It is observed on Poornima (thefull moon day) of the Hindu month Margasheersha (Decemeber-January). In year of 2009, Dattatreya Jayanthi falls on 1st December.
Dattatreya is meant as the single and united incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva – the trinity of Hindu gods, also called Trimurthy. Dattatreya appeared as the son of Maharishi Atri and Anasuya. The story is as follows.
The Legend of Dattatreya:
Anusuya: The Chaste wife of MaharishiAtri
Anusuya was the chaste wife of Maharishi Atri. Maharishi was a great sage and one of the seven maharishis and sages of the Earth. Anusuya was known for her chastity and was well established in the Pativrata Dharma, the unwaivering devotion towards her husband. She had a desire to have a son equal to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together. For this she started observing severe austerities and penances to get her wish fulfilled.
Inspired by Anusuya’s Pativrata Dharma, Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati, the consorts of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva respectively requested their husbands to test her. They asked them to go to her place and asked alms from her provided she should be naked while giving the alms.
Dattatreya is worshipped in many places in India. The day is marked by special pujas and rituals.
