The Union telecom minister, Mr A. Raja, has come under fire once again on the “spectrum scandal” as the CBI on Thursday conducted searches in the offices of the telecom ministry in the national capital including, the Wireless Planning Cell (WPC) and the office of the Deputy Director General (Access Services).

Based on a complaint received by the Central Vigilance Commission in 2008, a CBI probe was conducted into the procedures followed for selecting companies for giving 2G spectrum after allegations of irregularities were made.

The CBI registered a case on October 21 against unknown officials of DoT and unknown private persons and firms and others under Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI spokesman, Mr Harsh Bhal, said, “It has been alleged that there had been irregularities in the award of Unified Access Services Licences to private firms. As per information received, there was a criminal conspiracy between certain officials of DoT and private persons and companies to award licences to these firms by putting a cap on the number of applicants against Trai recommendations.”
