Pinning hopes on augmented nuclear fuel supply through imports, state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation is aiming to double its
electricity generation in the current fiscal to 28 billion units.

“The corporation is going to double its power generation this fiscal. Even under the convservative estimates, the power generation of the corporation would stand at 22 billion units,” a company official said.

The company began generating power from the second unit of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS) using imported fuel from Areva of France earlier this month.

“We have started production at our Rajasthan plant using imported fuel from Areva. The condition of fuel supply is now much better compared to the situation 2-3 years ago,” NPCIL Executive Director (Corporate Planning) S Thakur said on Friday.

The PSU had originally set a target of generating 19 billion units of electricity, he said.

NPCIL operates 17 atomic power plants with total generation capacity of 4,120 MW. The plants across the country are operating at 70 per cent of their installed capacity against less than 50 per cent last year.
