Selfridge Air Show 2009Selfridge Air Show 2009.The Selfridge Air Show & Open House. The flight offered a preview of the Selfridge Air Show & Open House, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Gates will be open to the public at 8 a.m. daily. Static display aircraft and countless military, aviation, and technology displays will be available to all guests daily after 8:00 a.m. A radio-controlled aircraft demonstration will take place from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00. Flying performances will begin at 11:00 a.m. and continue until the Thunderbird performance is over, about 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. Parking and admission are FREE!.

The show, which is held every two years, is the 127th Wing’s first since the government changed the unit’s mission from flying cargo planes to refueling jets in late 2007.

The transition was part of a 2005 federal effort to realign and close military bases.

A jet just like the one Karns used Wednesday and more than 100 other types of aircraft, including the KC-135 refueling jet, the A-10 Warthog attack jet and F-16 fighter jet, will either fly over Selfridge or be on display during the air show.

In addition, the U.S. Air Force precision flight team, the Thunderbirds, will demonstrate more than 40 aerial maneuvers.

A major theme for the 2009 show is technology, said Lt. Anthony Lesterson, a spokesman for the 127th Wing.

To that end, the latest in military equipment will be on display along with an exhibit from NASA, he said.

The 127th Wing and the show’s organizers are expecting as many as 200,000 spectators.

“We’ll have the KC-135 there on display and we’ll do a couple of fly-bys,” said Capt. Todd Wasilewski, who piloted the media’s flight on the Stratotanker on Wednesday.
