Job loss in Q1 hits 1.31 lakh
India has witnessed a whopping 1.31 lakh job losses during the April-June period, with the textile, IT/BPO and gems and jewellery being the worst affected sectors, the government said on Friday.
According to a Labour Bureau Survey for the quarter ended June this year, “With regard to the contract workers, there is an increase in employment by 40,000 as compared to a decline of 1.71 lakh in respect of regular (direct) employment.”
The survey said that the most affected sectors are export-oriented units especially in the textile, IT and gems and jewellery sectors, where the overall employment declined by 1.52 lakh, 48,000 and 23,000, respectively, during the April-June quarter.
The overall decline in employment in exporting units was 1.67 lakh as compared to a 35,000 rise in employment in non-exporting units.
In April, 38,000 jobs were lost, while 1.57 lakh were lost in May following the global slowdown, while June witnessed a rise in employment by 64,000.
The survey pointed out that one of the reasons for the decline in employment was the shortage of workers as migrant workers prefer to visit their places of origin during the period
