France will be the “partner country” for the India Aviation 2010 international aviation exhibition and conference that will be held from March 3 to 7, 2010, in Hyderabad, the Union civil aviation minister, Mr Praful Patel, said on Wednesday at the “launch function” for the biennial event.
Expressing confidence that the aviation sector would “tide over” the financial problems plaguing it, Mr Patel also said that the government had appointed consultant SBI Caps to prepare a roadmap for Air India “for restructuring of Air India in the short and medium term”.
The minister spoke about the need for re-defining of the aviation model from a full-service carrier to a lower-cost model and said that a “balance” (between the two models) is achievable. He also praised the Andhra Pradesh government for earlier lowering the sales tax on aviation turbine fuel thereby benefiting the aviation sector enormously.
Mr Patel said the government would seek the services of retired air traffic control officers (ATCOs) to bridge the shortfall in the number of ATCs.  Mr Patel said the government will not let down Air India. He said Air India “is doing its homework” by cutting out loss-making routes and promised that there will not be any interference in managing Air India.
On the India Aviation 2010 to be held in Hyderabad next year, Mr Patel said that he had requested the French transport minister for his country’s participation and that the request had been accepted.
The biennial event will be organised by the civil aviation ministry jointly with Ficci. The first edition of the event was organised in Hyderabad — the permanent venue —from October 15 to 18 last year in which the US was the partner country.
The India Aviation 2010 will be organised at the Begumpet Airport and will have several components including an international aviation exhibition.
