Hetero Drugs has bagged Indian government order of 9 million capsules of generic version of Tamiflu, the anti-viral for Swine Flu. The order is worth about Rs 35-Rs 36 crore. Indian government had sought bids for 10 million capsules of Tamiflu.

Hetero Drugs said that the company has got an order of 9 million capsules and the company will have to supply it in 5-6 weeks. It said that the company cannot sell product in Indian open market.

The Indian government is stockpiling the drug for particular purpose. The main criteria was to supply it to the government in shortest possible time. The company will be in a position to supply 5 million capsules in 3 weeks, it added.

The government is preparing to increase the stocks due to global spread of Swine Flu. Cipla, Ranbaxy Labs & Roche had also bid for the order. However, Cipla loses the bid to supply Tamiflu to Indian Government. Tamiflu supply to the government would have been a one time opportunity for Cipla.

Cipla was also one of the companies which had bid for stockpiling of Indian government. But had they won the contract then this could have possibly been a one time opportunity for Cipla which has not happened. However Cipla can continue and go ahead and bid in the international markets but it is not heard from anything on that front from international markets as well. This order is valued at about Rs 35-36 crore, so that could have been important but it has not happened. Cipla can possibly pursue in international market. Same is the case with Ranbaxy Labs. The order is own by Hetero which is not a listed company, so there will be no impact on the market as such.
